Jorts the cat wants “Our flag means death” to be renewed

Jorts the Cat and Jean dress up as pirates to renew

Jorts the Cat wants more soft pirate TV content from the folks behind Our flag means death, and here we are with Jorts. The wildly popular feline Twitter account was born from a viral reddit thread in December 2021 and is now a vibrant neighborhood voice for the defense of workers’ rights and social justice online, earning praise from figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Sometimes I like to imagine how to explain to people in the future, or maybe my mother right now, how a cat who emerged from a forum called “Am I the asshole” is now one of the main supporters of trade union organization and protect the reproductive rights and rights of LGBTQIA+ people in America. It’s one of those things where you just had to be there to watch the sequence of things progress, but we’re grateful for @JortsTheCat every day. The posts are written from the perspective of Jorts himself, an orange and white tabby whose image frequently graces the account alongside tortie cat and partner in the fight for equality, Jean.

Beyond their work towards a more just nation, Jorts and Jean sometimes comment on other subjects. Today I was thrilled to see Jorts make the case for another season of HBO Max’s hit pirate rom-com series. Our flag means death. Despite the fact that the show just passed its 7th consecutive week as the most requested new series, leading moon knight and Heart stroke—HBO Max remains mum on any renewal plans. 49 days have passed since the season finale, and the wait to know the fate of the series has become agonizing. Even for cats.

“We all do so many really hard things WHY WON’T THEY RENEW OUR PIRATE SHOW?!” Jorts the cat wrote on Twitter, attaching a photo of Jorts in a ruffled “Gentleman Pirate” tie in the style of the main character Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). With his steely gaze, I suppose that Jean here embodies the role of Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi). They are joined by a seagull (RIP, Karl). Jorts continued, “I know this doesn’t solve everything, but I just want more tender pirate TV.”

It is, as children would say, a mood. (Actually, kids probably don’t say that anymore, but it sure is a state of mind.) The Fans’ Campaign to Renew Our flag means death has been booming for months now, with tons of new content hitting social media every day. You can check hashtags #RenewOurFlagMeansDeath and #RenewAsACrew for beautiful fanart, great memes, and endless pleas to the gods of HBO Max.

We continue to hope that Our flag means death will be renewed (just like the creations of the show). Not to do so would be madness on the part of HBO Max: OMFD is a massive hit, features a beloved cast, doesn’t have a giant budget, has amassed one of the most dedicated fandoms in decades, and generated wave after wave of press for its groundbreaking portrayal on every level. Shamelessly queer, beautifully diverse, delightfully subversive, staunchly body-positive, equal parts sweet, devastating, and hilariously funny, Our flag means death is the show we need now. With American politics becoming more gruesome and oppressive day by day, we also need a win and a wonderful diversion to look forward to. As Jorts said, “We all do so many really hard things.” Please HBO Max.

Here are some of the responses to Jorts’ renewal push, including from other feline pirate aficionados:

Jorts had previously expressed an affinity for Our flag means deathvolunteer to go to sea and join the crew of The payback. The idea was approved by showrunner David Jenkins:

Two things are clear: Our flag means death must be renewed, like yesterday, and the show should have a ship cat (or cats) in Season 2, at least for a star-studded cameo. Jorts (and Jean) are ready for their close-up.
